University Liggett Athletic Director Michelle Hicks has been named Regional Athletic Director of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Directors Association.

Hicks, a Grosse Pointe Woods resident, is in her 27th year at Liggett — the last 10 years of which she has been the school's athletic director.

She is one of 14 administrators statewide to be honored by the MIAAA at its annual mid-winter conference, March 17.

"Michelle cares deeply about the people she works with and demonstrates a passion for the involvement of students, coaches, fans and parents in educational athletics," says Liggett's Head of the Upper School, Trey Cassidy. "She is a good teacher, helping to support her coaches and athletes as they learn the game and translate lessons of sport into lessons of life off the field. She is an outstanding ambassador in our community and has helped ensure that our programs are recognized for their achievements."

Hicks, who comes from a family of educators — her great-grandmother, mother, uncle, brother and daughter have all been in the profession — believes athletic participation can help students become a part of something bigger than themselves, Cassidy says.

Under her direction, the Liggett teams have had extraordinary records and seasons. This month, the girls' varsity hockey team won the state championship and the girls' basketball team was crowned regional champs and made it to the state semi-finals.

"Michelle was instrumental in the resurgence of all our teams," Cassidy says, "but was especially supportive of rebuilding the football and cross-country teams, which had been removed from our program but have since become state finalist and tournament playoff teams."

Hicks came directly to Liggett from Central Michigan University, where she earned an undergraduate degree in sports medicine.

She has two adult children, Laura and Zac.
