For nearly three weeks in November, Monteith Elementary School’s student council ran a “Be A Hunger Hero” Gleaners Food Bank Collection. The collection totaled 1,360 pounds of assorted foods that council advisors Beth Wang and Vi Hadgikosti donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.

“Without advocates like you in our community, Gleaners would not be able to collect over 2.5 million pounds of food from food drives and distribute them to our more than 550 partners each year,” Gleaners food drive manager Stephanie Melnick said in an e-mail to the student council. “Through your support, you are helping to connect hungry people with the food they need when and where they need it.”

According to Melnick’s e-mail, Monteith’s donation provides approximately 1,129 meals to people in need.

“Outstanding job,” Melnick said.
