University Liggett School has named Peggy Dettlinger new head of lower school and Peter Gaines new head of upper school.

Dettlinger replaces Sheila Chaps, who is retiring after 10 years at the school, and Gaines steps in for Trey Cassidy, who is leaving Liggett after five years for a position as head of school at the Bancroft School in Worcester, Mass.

Appointments take effect July 1, 2014.

“We are sorry to be losing two dedicated and gifted educators,” said Joseph Healey, head of school. “But we are blessed to have two equally talented administrators to take their places.”

The past two years, Dettlinger has served as assistant head of lower school. She has more than 20 years experience in the classroom, while Gaines, who joined Liggett in 2010 as dean of students, spent the past year as assistant head of upper school.

He previously taught English and worked in admissions and as a guidance counselor at the Abington Friends School near Philadelphia, before coming to Liggett.

The school will begin a national search for new assistant heads of the lower and upper schools.
