August 29, 2013FIRST Robotics team 1189, the Gearheads, is making an appearance at Grosse Pointe's annual VillageFest Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, where it'll demonstrate the capabilities of its robot from previous seasons.
The team is expected on Kercheval near Trader Joe's from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Founded in 2002, the Gearheads is a joint robotics team from Grosse Pointe North and South high schools.

Students participating on the team get a hands-on experience in various fields such as computer programming, CAD and design, marketing, web development, and mechanical and electrical engineering.
In addition, students have multiple opportunities to develop and sharpen problem-solving, time management and math skills.
Last April, the team qualified for the FIRST World Championship competition at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.
FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is the organizing body whose mission is "to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership."
