North Pointe, Grosse Pointe North High School’s student newspaper, won Best of Show last weekend at the 2012 JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in San Antonio, Texas, one of several awards for North students during the weekend.


The student newspaper was one of 10 selected in the “Newspaper Broadsheet 8 or fewer pages” category. Emma Ockerman, Breann Reveley and Kirsten Schoensee also received awards Sunday, Nov. 18, theirs in the write-off competitions. In the competitions, 1,734 students participated, 679 won, 117 earned superior, 209 excellent and 353 honorable mention. Ockerman earned “excellent” in commentary writing, Reveley “honorable mention” in YB Copy/Caption: Sports and Schoensee “excellent” in YB Copy/Caption: Clubs.

“We left San Antonio all smiles (Sunday, Nov. 18),” said Shari Adwers, adviser for both the Valhalla yearbook and North Pointe student newspaper.
