Muralist and painter Dennis Orlowski is the next featured artist in University Liggett School’s ongoing visiting artist series, his exhibit, “In the Grand Tradition,” currently on display in the school’s Manoogian Arts Wing.
Orlowski, born in Detroit in 1944, is responsible for more than 100 murals across Southeast Michigan and around the world, including Germany and Mexico, where he spent a year studying fresco painting at the University of Mexico, educated by a former assistant to Diego Rivera.
His work is found mostly in public venues such as churches and libraries and schools, in particular, Maire Elementary School. Orlowski painted a mural in the school library about 25 years ago and another one recently in honor of Maire’s 75th anniversary.
For his exhibition at Liggett, a majority of the pieces on display are portraitures done in oil. The exhibition runs during school hours now through Thursday, Dec. 20. Visitors enter in the main entrance.
