Teacher Kathy Schmitz's second grade class at Richard Elementary School presented "The Ugly Pumpkin," the story of a butternut squash — the ugly pumpkin — sprouting among pumpkins in a pumpkin patch, grown specially for the school jack-o-lantern contest.

Students performed two afternoon shows Friday, Oct. 26, in the classroom for parents and fellow classmates. Shows concluded with poetry readings.

"I've been doing this about eight years," Schmitz said. "Every year they just surprise me."
