CITY OF GROSSE POINTE — There’s time left in the construction season to complete road repairs on Goethe.

A section of road between Washington and Fisher is being rebuilt with a new concrete base.

“This street is a complete reconstruction project due to its failed status,” said Gary Huvaere, City of Grosse Pointe director of public service.


Work was awarded to low-bidder Fiore Enterprises of Detroit, for $266,077.

“(We) have worked with Fiore in the recent past on similar projects in Center Line, Grosse Pointe Woods and are currently working with them in Fraser and find them qualified for the work,” said Patrick Phelan, of Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick, the city’s engineering consultants.

The two-block stretch of Goethe being repaired is so deteriorated it needs more than the top surface replaced.

“Bids were submitted for two alternatives on this project,” said Phelan. “The base bid included reconstruction with 7-inch-thick concrete pavement on an aggregate base.”

The second option featured a 5-inch asphalt pavement on an aggregate base.

Concrete was forecast as less expensive in the long run.

“The service life of concrete pavement is anticipated to be longer than asphalt pavement,” Phelan said.

A life cycle cost analysis determined the cost per year concrete is $11,600 compared with $17,100 for asphalt.

“We also performed an analysis for the expected costs for each construction method over a 40-year period, incorporating capital preventive maintenance and rehabilitation costs,” Phelan said.

His analysis showed concrete costing $7,900 compared with asphalt costing $10,300 per year over the 40 years.
