August 01, 2013CITY OF GROSSE POINTE — Another batch of 64-gallon, wheeled refuse carts is on the way.
Some 500 carts were ordered last week from Bell Equipment of Lake Orion.
Bell’s price of $61 per cart totals $31,500.
City of Grosse Pointe residents can buy carts at cost from the public service department.
Bell supplied the city 500 toter carts five years ago.
Carts have 10-inch wheels, a handle, hinged lid and 10-year warranties.
“The carts have the city logo and a serial number,” said Gary Huvaere, public service supervisor.
Toter carts, like any trash bin, are for refuse only.
“Garbage is supposed to be bagged, even if it is in a can,” said Peter Dame, city manager.
City officials also intend to buy smaller carts for residents that don’t need 64-gallon containers.
“We are planning to provide 10 mini barrels to (the) elderly as a test to see whether a smaller bucket would be more accommodating,” Dame said.
