Park Chilly Fest slated Feb. 2

January 24, 2013
Winter has arrived just in time for Grosse Pointe Park’s Chilly Fest, scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, with lots of fun cold weather events being held at both of the city’s parks.

The Grosse Pointe Skate Team, made up of skaters from both Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South high schools, will be featured in an figure skating show at Patterson Park beginning at 1 p.m. Other activities at Patterson Park include a horse drawn trolley ride, open skating following the skate team show, an ice carving demonstration, putt putt golf and a s’mores station. And if the snow gods permit, there will be a snowboarding demonstration at 2:30 p.m. on the sledding hill, a snowman building contest and a snowball throwing contest.

“Obviously, we’re hoping for snow,” said Terry Solomon, the Park’s director of parks and recreation. “But even if it doesn’t snow, we have lots of other activities, including several fun indoor games and events.”

Windmill Pointe Park activities include face painting and crafts in the Lavins Center, bouncy inflatables and a balloon artist in the gym. Snowshoes will be available to borrow for trekking around the park. There will also be ice fishing in the marina and a snowmobile saucer pull in back of the Tompkins Center. If you need to warm up, the Blue Pointe Restaurant will be serving up chili, hot dogs and hot chocolate in the Tompkins Center for a small fee.

As in past years, residents are welcome to bring their dogs to Windmill Pointe Park that day, but are reminded their dogs must be kept on a leash at all times and owners are asked to clean up after their pets.

“This is always a fun event for our residents and always very well attended, even on the coldest of days,” Solomon said. “Everyone enjoys getting outside and seeing their neighbors. Now all we need is snow to make the day complete, but even without it, there will still be lots to do.”

Chilly Fest is free to residents. Additional information can be found on the city’s website, grossepointepark.org. or by calling Solomon at (313) 822-2812.
