It’s the bane of every local cop on a big case:

“The feds are taking the lead on this investigation,” said John Schulte, chief of public safety in Grosse Pointe Shores.

Homeland Security and the Secret Service elbowed their way into the Shores’ pursuit of identity thieves.

“The complaints here are minimal,” Schulte said. “However, it’s going to be a large operation.”

The suspects were traced to the personnel department of a company that Schulte didn’t name.

“In May of this year, we began investigation into an identity fraud case involving two Shores residents,” Schulte said.

Police learned the Shores victims were among those in “several other communities,” Schulte said.

He and Detective Sgt. Scott Rohr worked with seven other agencies putting the investigation together, Schulte said.

“The more we peeled the onion, the more we saw it was a significant operation,” Schulte said. “Last week, we met with an investigator from Homeland Security and the Secret Service along with two federal prosecutors. They came here.”
