Surface permit rate raised

November 22, 2012
CITY OF GROSSE POINTE — Permit parking fees for Village surface lots are increased $5 per month.

The monthly charge becomes $50.

New rates match the cost of monthly permits at the municipal parking structure.

Eliminating lower rates for surface lots is supposed to drive surface permit holders to the parking deck, thereby opening off-street spaces for Village customers, according to City of Grosse Pointe officials.

“We’re trying to get people to move into the garage,” said Peter Dame, city manager. “It’s for benefit of shoppers.”

He wants to preserve the most convenient parking spots for customers and future patrons of the Neighborhood Club/Beaumont fitness center.

The parking structure has unused capacity.

“On any given day, we have 70 to 100 parking spots available in the garage,” Dame said.

Permit fees hadn’t changed since 2006, he said.

“There are approximately 132 permit holders in the surface lots,” he said. “If all permit holders retained their permits, the added annual revenue would be $7,920.”

The additional revenue goes into the parking fund, Dame said.

Funds are used to operate, maintain and develop reserves for replacement and improvements of parking facilities, Dame said.
