SOC annual flu clinics available

Services for Older Citizens annual flu clinics are from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2 and Wednesday, Oct. 18 at its facility, 158 Ridge, Grosse Pointe Farms.

Harper Woods Public Library, 19601 Harper, holds a flu clinic from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6.

According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 90 percent of flu-related deaths and more than half of flu-related hospitalizations occur in people age 65 and older.

Steps to help protect against getting the flu include:

wash hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub,

avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth,

avoid close contact with sick people,

sleep eight hours,


manage stress,

drink plenty of fluids,

eat healthy food,

cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezeing,

throw the tissue in the trash after and

if sick with flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever dissapates without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

Vaccinations are available by appointment only.

The vaccines are covered by Medicare.

Bring the Medicare card, driver’s license or Michigan identification card, along with any supplemental health insurance card.

Without Medicare, there is a charge for a flu vaccine.
