There are a few signs of spring, mostly ignored by Mother Nature this year.

Despite a fraudulent forecast by furry Phil of Punxsutawney, Pa., no one should ignore the good time planned at the Action Auction May 8 & 11.

A sure sign of spring is the annual fundraising event by the Grosse Pointe Academy.

This year's event features some of the great things from years past with a few new twists and is titled "All the places you'll go."

The two-night event begins with a silent auction from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8. Cocktails and strolling food stations catered by Plum Market are part of the evening, which also gives a live auction preview from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The silent auction features dozens of great donated gifts and will utilize the ClickBid process, which allows bidding from smartphones, iPod Touch devices or tablets.

Volunteers will have bidding devices to help at the event.

The main event begins 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11. The silent auction is open until 7 p.m. Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and seated dinner begin at 6 p.m. and is catered by Plum Market . DuMouchelle Auctioneers will start the live auction at 7:30 p.m. and the night ends with Neiman Marcus Club Action Auction, with dessert and dancing from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m.

Both nights are at the Grosse Pointe Academy Tracy Fieldhouse. Complimentary valet parking is available at the Moran Road entrance.

General chairs for this year's Action Auction are the Michelle and Chuck Becker family and the Sandra and Peter Cavataio family. Honorary chairs are Vicki and Robert Liggett Jr.

Corporate sponsors include Meridian Health Plan, Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Scott Shuptrine Interiors, St. John Providence Heal th System, Comerica, McLaren Medical Group, Lippitt O'Keefe, PLLC, Plante Moran, Fisher & Company, Dr. Peter Cavataio, Plum Market, Telemus Capital, Neiman Marcus, Jenny and Ken Fuehauf, Renee and Chuck Janovsky, Andrea and Chris Provenzano and the Grosse Pointe News.

Dozens of individuals, families and businesses donated to the auction and are featured in the auction's 158-page auction book.

A host of volunteers helps make the auction a success year after year.

"It was a lot of work, but it wasn't bad at all," said co-chair Sandra Cavataio. "The community is supportive and it's been a lot of fun."

Co-chair Michelle Becker said several trips are available at the live auction.

"The apartment in Paris is amazing," Becker said. "The home in Sicily and the trip to Three Forks Ranch will be popular."

Other live items include an oil painting by Jane McFeely, an IWC watch, black Tahitian South Sea pearls and diamond necklace and more from edmund t. AHEE jewelers, a full-length brown mink coat, a Fiat 500C and a Chicago getaway with Bears tickets and hotel stay.

A two bedroom Kapalua Bay villa in Maui, Comerica Park suite for a Tigers game, a Mad Men Party catered by The Hill Seafood & Chop House and a Masters Golf Tournament trip for two will all be up for bid.

"It's been a great time working on this auction," Cavataio said. "Michelle and I worked well together."

"We're excited about the auction," Becker said. "It's going to be a great night."
