The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Grosse Pointe officially gets underway at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, when event volunteers and participants gather at The Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center, 20025 Mack Plaza, for a kickoff rally launching 2013 fundraising efforts.
Although the Relay For Life of Grosse Pointe is more than five months away, the public can attend the event.
At least nine teams have signed up for the spring event.
One in every 100 Americans participates in this global fundraising event.
The American Society observes 100 years of fighting cancer.
Relay For Life participants and visitors have a chance to celebrate the victory of local cancer survivors during the Survivors Lap.
The luminaria ceremony remembers those who are fighting cancer or those who have died from cancer.
The Fight Back Ceremony gives attendees a chance to proclaim a personal way of taking action against the disease.
Donations can be made to this local Relay For Life event by visiting RelayForLife.org/GrossePointeMI. Community members also can start or join a team by following the links to their local relay event.
The 24-hour 2013 Relay For Life of Grosse Pointe begins at 10 a.m. Saturday May 11, and Sunday, May 12, at the Grosse Pointe Woods Lake Front Park.
