Historical society

The Grosse Pointe Historical Society hosts an open house and tours of the Provencal-Weir House, 376 Kercheval, Grosse Pointe Farms, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

The children's workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, offers those 6 years and older a chance to make an apple pie. To register, call (313) 884-7010.

The cost is $15 for historical society members and $23 for non-members.

Men's club

The Senior Men's Club of Grosse Pointe lunch is at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. The cost is $10.

The Friends of the Grosse Pointe Public Library are asking for donations of gently used Halloween costumes, sizes infant to teen. Donation boxes are located at each library branch.

The sale of the costumes is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, and 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, in the Program Room at the Grosse Pointe Woods branch, 20680 Mack.

Most costumes are sold for $5. Costume accessories, Halloween books and videos will be for sale.

Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Grosse Pointe Library and its many programs throughout the year.

Members of the Friends of the Grosse Pointe Public Library are admitted 15 minutes early.

The Family Center

The Family Center hosts "Mental Health First Aid Training: Focus on Adults" 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 17, and Sept. 24, in the board room of the Grosse Pointe Academy Lake Shore building.

The free program is an eight-hour training dedicated to providing adult participants with basic tools to assist others in case of a developing mental illness or mental health crisis situation.

"Mental Health First Aid Training: Focus on Youth" is offered from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 17 and Sept. 24, in the parlor at the Grosse Pointe Academy.

The free training program is tailored to adults working with young people in order to provide participants with basic tools to assist youth in case of developing mental illness or mental health crisis situation.

Participants are introduced to the common risk factors and warning signs of specific types of illnesses, like anxiety, depression, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and schizophrenia. A three-year certification is presented upon the completion of the eight-hour training.

St. Paul

St. Paul Lutheran Church holds a rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the church, 375 Lothrup at Chalfonte, Grosse Pointe


Belle Isle

The 8th annual Garden Party on Belle Isle Benefit is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, on the grounds of the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Belle Isle.

Proceeds support restoration of the passage between the island's conservatory and aquarium.   

Live music, hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, wine tasting and tours of the aquarium and conservatory are included.

Tickets cost $50 in advance and $55 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at

The event co-chairs are Robin Heller and Sonya Ackman, both of Grosse Pointe Farms.

Wigs 4 Kids

Wigs 4 Kids holds its 11th annual gala 6 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Barrister Gardens, 24225 Harper, St. Clair Shores.

The evening includes dinner, desserts, raffles, silent auctions of sports memorabilia, talent performances by Wigs 4 Kids recipients, karate demonstrations and a money booth.

Fun run

Run for a Reason, a 5K run/walk and a one mile fun run is set for 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The run to benefit the Mary Ann Van Elslander neonatal intensive care unit and special care nursery costs $25 for the 5K run/walk, $20 for those 10 and under for the 5K run/walk and $10 for the fun run and includes a T-shirt when pre-registering. The day of the race, the cost for the 5K run/walk is $35 and $30 for those 10 and under for the same race. Family activities follow the race.

The event is sponsored by The yacht club, THE GUILD, the Fontbonne Auxiliary and St. John Providence Health System.
