Soroptimist Interna-tional of Grosse Pointe received the Governor's Club award of Excellent Performance during the Midwestern Regional Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

The award was given for outstanding performance in all aspects of the region strategic plan. Of the 33 region clubs, Grosse Pointe ranked the highest.

The local organization also was a region finalist for its submission of Soroptimist Celebrating Success: membership, member recruitment and retention. This submission moves on to federation level for further judging with other region finalists.

Of the nine Soroptimist clubs in District III, Grosse Pointe earned three of the four Shining Star District Awards: fundraising, program and membership for the idea of recruiting new members through relevant programs such as human trafficking awareness.

The Midwestern region is comprised of 33 clubs in six states, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.

Working to fulfill this mission, Soroptimist clubs of Grosse Pointe and Greater Macomb sponsored an April 30 panel discussion to share with the community the human trafficking laws currently in legislation in Lansing. According to Allison Bedker, president of Gateway to Hope, human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. It includes sex trafficking of children and adults more than 18 years of age, who are forced into commercial sex acts. In the United States, an estimated 100,000 children are forced into the sex trade each year. Anyone forced into forms of 'labor or services' such as domestic workers held in a home or farm workers forced to labor against their will are victims of human trafficking.

The trafficking hotline is 1-888-3737-888.
