The Friends of the Library classic book lecture hosts Gregg Crane from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at the Grosse Pointe Public Library, Ewald branch. He discusses Emily Dickinson's poetry.

A teen poetry slam is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, April 14, at the Ewald branch. Local poet Tom Budday facilitates an evening of competitive poetry performances from Grosse Pointe teens. Prizes to the top three poets are awarded.

The Friends of the Library host author Ron Rademacher at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at the Woods branch.

His presentation, "Ten Michigan Destinations You Might Have Missed," is on Michigan's back roads and unique destinations. He is an author of four books about road trips and out of the way places in Michigan.

Garden club

The Grosse Pointe Shores Garden Club meets for lunch at noon Friday, April 4. The 1 p.m. program is on the Greening of Detroit.

des Jardinieres

The La Societe des Jardinieres meets at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at the United Methodist Church, 211 Moross, Grosse Pointe Farms. Design artist Carol Reed gives a tour of the church's stained glass windows and altar paraments.

A luncheon, hosted by member Phyllis Kerslake at her house, follows the tour.


Services for Older Citizens hosts a TED Talks at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, with Dan Pink, who discusses "The Surprising Science of Motivation."

Acting for stage and screen classes are from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, April 16 through May 21. The cost is $50 and the class size is limited.

Through exercises and character development, students learn how to prepare for an audition and interact with others on stage or in front of a camera. Upon completion of the class each student receives a DVD and a one-on-one video feedback with the instructor, Harry Burkey. For more information, call Burkey at (313) 885-1393.

The League of Women Voters of Grosse Pointe meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Unitarian Church's annex building, 17150 Maumee, City of Grosse Pointe. Members are to come to a consensus on questions to be posed at the League of Women Voters Michigan conference.


LocalMotionGreen@ Ecology Center hosts a workshop to discuss green cosmetics from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Neighborhood Club, 17150 Waterloo, City of Grosse Pointe.

Attendees will learn what to look for on labels and how to avoid the top five most prevalent and hazardous chemicals. They also will be provided with resources, tips and shoppers' guides.

Tuesday Musicale

The Tuesday Musicale of Detroit hosts three musicians at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, at the Max Fisher Music Center at Orchestra Hall, 3711 Woodward, Detroit.

Bass-baritone singer Mark Watson, trumpet player Bill Baxtresser and pianist Dizhou Zhao perform a variety of music.
